Skills and competences

The University of Ferrara Medical School is a well-known medical school in the Italian system. The hosting institution, the Department of Experimental and Diagnostic Medicine, is modern, large facilities at the forefront of biomedical research, and represent the highest category of excellence and modernity of facilities available.
The most important facilities and equipments available are:

  • tissue culture and molecular biology lab for the use of "class 2" genetically modified organisms
  • Zeiss 510 confocal microscope
  • digital imaging systems
  • apparatuses for the detection of cellular luminescence
  • high sensitive plate readers for luminescence and fluorescence
  • robot for high-throughput plate handling
  • animal house hosting transgenics

The laboratory has developed avouched competences in the studying of calcium homeostasis, in particular using recombinant proteins such as the Ca2+-sensitive photoprotein aequorin and the mutants of GFP.
Moreover the Department is part of the Interdisciplinary Center of Excellence for the Study of Inflammation and operates as Telethon Center for Cell Imaging. Also for these reasons the Department is acknowledged as among the top in the world in mitochondrial functional imaging.
Finally, the group is involved in the study of adipocytes differentiation.
